چکیده

The effects of a wildfire, occurred in August 1992, on nutrient losses by water erosion have been studied. The fire affected an area of 9498 ha of Pine forest and shrub, located in Sierra Calderona (Valencia, Spain). In the burned area, six stations of erosion measurement were set up immediately after the end of the fire. The results obtained in these stations are reported. Topographical, edaphological and vegetation characteristics of each station are described. Fourteen episodes of erosive rain with production of runoff and sediments, between August 1992 and November 1993, were studied, mainly in relation to changes in the soil chemical characteristics. Data show that the highest soil and nutrient losses were produced in the period immediately after the fire. However, fire intensity is the factor that determines the soil status with respect to its response to nutrient losses.

Contrasting soil thermal responses to fire in Alaskan tundra and boreal forest

Recent fire activity throughout Alaska has increased the need to understand postfire impacts on soils and permafrost vulnerability. Our study utilized data and modeling from a permafrost and ecosystem gradient to develop a mechanistic understanding of the shortand long-term impacts of tundra and boreal forest fires on soil thermal dynamics. Fires influenced a variety of factors that altered the...

Spatial variation in soil properties and diffuse losses between and within grassland fields with similar short‐term management

One of the major challenges for agriculture is to understand the effects of agricultural practices on soil properties and diffuse pollution, to support practical farm-scale land management. Three conventionally managed grassland fields with similar short-term management, but different ploughing histories, were studied on a long-term research platform: the North Wyke Farm Platform. The aims were...

Nitrogen and Phosphorous Loss as Affected by Plough Direction in Rainfed Wheat Land of a Semi- Arid Region

Sloping farmlands are the major sources of soil, water and nutrient losses in arid and semi-arid regions. Information about the impacts of different tillage practices on soil erosion, nutrient loss and crop nutrient uptake on the sloping farmland of semi- arid soil is, however, limited. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of tillage direction on soil, water, nitrogen and phosp...

Soil Pore Characteristics, Hydraulic Conductivity and Soil Bulk Density as Influenced by Agroforestry and Grass Buffer Conservation Practices

Despite improvements in the use of soil conservation practices, crop rotation and nutrient management programs, significant concern still exists regarding soil erosion and nutrient losses in runoff from row crop production. In the US, states are required to implement water quality standards based on USEPA guidelines or other scientifically defensible methods (Ice and Binkley, 2003). Agroforestr...

Quantifying hydrological effects of crop diversification in Northern Iran paddy fields

There are human and animal health concerns related to drainage systems because nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, can contaminate water supplies. A field study was conducted on consolidated paddy fields of Sari Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources University, Northern Iran (36.3°N, 53.04°E), to determine the effect of subsurface drain depth and spacing on nitrogen (N) and pho...
